Profile Editor

Top  Previous  Next

The Profile Editor helps you manage the profiles setup in the XML configuration file WebReportsConfig.xml. You will need at least one profile in order for the web reports to work properly.

A profile contains information such as:

Database Connection Information (Database Server host name, login, etc.)
Language
Default search settings

It is usually enough to have one profile in the XML file, however in some cases having multiple profiles can be useful, especially when more than one administrator works with the web reports on a regular basis:

Different users of the web reports need different languages
You have multiple databases that you want to access through the same server
Different users prefer different font sizes
Different users prefer different default settings in the web reports
Different profiles for different Dashboards

Profile Overview

You can create as many profiles as you wish, and you can switch between profiles using the pull-down menu on the menu bar:

Changing a profile while viewing results will not change the present output, you will have to make a new selection or issue a new search in order for the new profile to be effective.

Accessing Profiles directly

You can access a non-default profile directly by appending the profile name to the URL in the following syntax:

?PROFILE=ProfileName

where ProfileName is the name of the profile. For example, to access the dashboard for a different profile navigate to

http://localhost/EventSentry/eventsentry_dashboard.asp?PROFILE=ProfileName

Built-In Authentication

In the event the built-in authentication is turned on, the Profile Editor will provide the default values for each user in the same manner it would with authentication turned off. The built-in authentication allows each user to recreate User Overrides for many of the values present in the profile. However, database connections can only be declared in the Profile Editor.

Changing default values

To change default settings, simply change the values and click the Apply button on the lower right-hand corner. Most values are self-explanatory, please see below for a description of some values.

Default Profile

You can set a profile (and only one profile) to be the default profile. This option is only useful when you have more than one profile configured. When you access the web reports without specifying a profile (e.g. http://localhost/EventSentry) then the default profile will automatically be loaded.

Show Locations

When activated, you can assign computers to locations to search for information based on a location. All pages which support the location feature (e.g. Event Search) allow you to create locations and assign computers to locations. There two important things to remember when activating locations:

Activating the location feature may slow down the speed of certain database queries. If you experience delays with queries then disable this feature to see if that speeds up your queries.
If a computer is not assigned to a location then that computer will not show up in any query. Always make sure that all computers in your database are assigned to a location.
